So this was not a deserted street with two people on it, it was just that the exposure was so long that only the two nearly motionless people were captured on film.
This just has to be a good metaphor for something. Maybe deep space is swarming with huge lifeforms that we can't see because they don't stay still long enough to resolve on the biggest telescopes.
